In 1964, after a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, Lieutenant Colonel James Roberts and his wife, Mildred, moved Bruce and his three brothers to Fort Lauderdale. Bruce and his brothers graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. He is a St. Thomas University graduate, holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute, Command Officers Development Course.
Bruce has served professional and civic organizations including the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce; International, Florida and Broward County Police Chiefs Associations; Advisory Board of the Broward County Crime Commission; Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse; Broward Workshop Criminal Justice Committee; Fort Lauderdale Police Officers Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.
During Bruce’s time as Police Chief, he is proud that:
- Fort Lauderdale enjoyed the two lowest crime rates in the history of the city since 1974.
- The department obtained dissolution of a consent decree from the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division specific to diversity hiring and promotion;
- Ensured the department adhered to professional standards and best practices by twice achieving reaccreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.
- Implemented new technology and training for disaster preparedness and homeland security.
- Enhanced technology for a computerized Internal Affairs tracking system.
With his roots firmly planted in District 1, and having served the citizens of Fort Lauderdale for 35 years, Bruce is ready to continue working to make the City the best it can be.
Bruce and Scharlene have been married since 1979 and they have lived in their current home in Imperial Point since 1992. Bruce and Scharlene’s two children also graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, and received full scholarships to pursue undergraduate and graduate-level studies. Elizabeth is a graduate of the University of Florida and is a Police Officer in Boca Raton; Gregory is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and is pursuing a doctoral degree at Yale University.
