In 1964, after a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, Lieutenant Colonel James Roberts and his wife, Mildred, moved Bruce and his three brothers to Fort Lauderdale. Bruce and his brothers graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. He is a St. Thomas University graduate, holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute, Command Officers Development Course.
Bruce has served professional and civic organizations including the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce; International, Florida and Broward County Police Chiefs Associations; Advisory Board of the Broward County Crime Commission; Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse; Broward Workshop Criminal Justice Committee; Fort Lauderdale Police Officers Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Bruce and Scharlene have been married since 1979 and they have lived in their current home in Imperial Point since 1992. Bruce and Scharlene’s two children also graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, and received full scholarships to pursue undergraduate and graduate-level studies. Elizabeth is a graduate of the University of Florida and is a Police Officer in Boca Raton; Gregory is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and is pursuing a doctoral degree at Yale University.
